El Programa Preuniversitario

For students aged 15.5 to 19 years old

This semester is all about direction, independence, confidence and maturity.

A Purposeful Semester of Study and Growth

January to June 2027

The Pre-University Programme is a taught semester for students aged 16–19* who are seeking academic structure, intellectual challenge and thoughtful guidance at a pivotal stage in their international experience. Students receive approximately 22 hours of supervised teaching per week in small groups, creating a focused and supportive academic environment.

The programme is designed specifically For students who choose to continue their studies into the spring. During the first months in a new country, students are often energised by cultural immersion, new friendships and unfamiliar experiences. As they become more settled and confident in English, their needs naturally evolve. They are ready for deeper academic engagement, clearer personal goals and a more intentional preparation for what comes next.

In many post-16 systems, significant independent study is expected. While this fosters autonomy, not all students thrive without structured direction. This semester provides renewed focus without unnecessary examination pressure. Rather than continuing A-level courses designed for UK public examinations, students engage in purposeful academic study that strengthens analytical thinking, academic writing, research skills and disciplined study habits.

University visits form part of the programme, giving students first-hand insight into different institutions and subject areas. This encourages informed reflection on future degree choices and possible specialisations within qualifications such as the Abitur, Matura or equivalent systems. For many, this stage is particularly motivating, as interests begin to align with realistic academic pathways.

At the same time, families understandably want reassurance that their child will return home ready for demanding courses. The programme therefore places strong emphasis on academic discipline, independent research and the development of focused intellectual interests. Students complete structured assignments and undertake guided research projects, ensuring continued progression rather than plateau.

Shaped by over 35 years of experience working with international students, the Pre-University Programme reflects a deep understanding of this transitional moment. It offers structure without rigidity, challenge without overload and guidance without dependency. In a fast-changing world that can create uncertainty about the future, we help students slow down, think clearly and move forward with confidence.

The outcome is not simply a completed semester, but greater maturity, strengthened academic habits and a clearer sense of direction.

*We have a limited number of places available for students aged 15.5 and above.

Our programme offers:

• A full weekly timetable
• Regular teacher contact
• Guided academic writing and research
• Supervised study skills development
• Structured discussion and presentation practice

Timetable

It prepares students both for:

• University study in the UK or internationally
• A confident return to full-time education in their home country (Abitur, Matura and equivalent qualifications)

Students strengthen the study habits, analytical thinking and academic English required for success in demanding examination systems.

There are clear outcomes:

By June, students will have:

• Stronger academic English
• Greater confidence in structured argument
• Improved research and study skills
• Experience of seminar-style learning
• Clearer academic direction

Students have the opportunity to prepare for recognised external examinations such as LAMDA or Cambridge English.

As all students return to full-time education in their home country, time is built into the timetable to help them prepare for this transition. Where possible, we provide additional support, most commonly through classes in Latin or modern foreign languages.

Cambridge ESL

We are committed to rigorous English development throughout the semester. With sustained engagement, students are supported to progress towards C2 (Proficiency). Those entering with lower levels typically make substantial progress, often reaching C1 (Advanced) by the end of the programme.

LAMDA

Students may enter for graded examinations with the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA), demonstrating advanced communication skills that support university interviews, structured academic presentations and confident participation in seminar-style learning.

Charity

We are committed to meaningful community engagement throughout the semester. Students contribute through volunteering at local primary schools, scout groups and sports clubs, or through registered charities such as Make a Smile, developing responsibility, empathy and confidence.

Academics

Structured learning and intellectual growth are prioritised over examinations. However, a student who has prior knowledge a subject, may prepare for a suitable external examination. This is considered carefully with families to ensure it enhances the student’s development.

The semester is organised into core academic study, intellectual development and applied learning.

A Programme Informed by Many Years of Guiding Young People Across the Gap Between Where They Are and Who They Want to Become

This programme has been shaped by over 35 years of experience working with international students. It reflects careful observation of what young people genuinely need at this stage: structure, encouragement, intellectual challenge and space to grow in confidence.

Its design draws on educational research, learning theory and neuroscience, as well as decades of listening closely to student feedback. Our aim is not only academic progress, but a semester that feels purposeful, motivating and personally transformative.

In a world that is changing rapidly — and can at times feel uncertain — we believe in slowing the pace and focusing on what truly matters. Rather than feeling threatened by developments such as artificial intelligence, students learn to engage with them thoughtfully and critically.

Alongside academic study, we strengthen the enduring skills that remain valuable across systems and over time: critical thinking, articulate communication, adaptability and intellectual curiosity.

The result is a young person who returns home — or moves forward to university — more mature, more confident and better equipped for the demands ahead.

Facilities

Brighton House offers the best of both worlds. Students are based in our own dedicated learning space — warm, welcoming and thoughtfully designed to feel calm, supportive and personal. Small class sizes and a gentle atmosphere allow students to feel known as individuals, creating an environment in which they can concentrate, ask questions and grow in confidence.

We are located just a short walk from Newman College, whose extensive modern facilities complement our own setting. Through strong local relationships, students benefit from access to larger lecture spaces, specialist rooms and high-quality sports facilities when appropriate.

This combination allows us to maintain the care and focus of a small foundation environment while offering access to the breadth and quality of facilities typically associated with a much larger institution.
